В колониальный период название территории современного штата Вермонт. В 1749 первый губернатор колонии Нью-Хэмпшир Б. Уэнтуорт [Wentworth, Benton] начал раздавать поселенцам земли от имени английского короля. К 1761 этот процесс ускорился, и к 1764 существовало более 130 поселков [township] со своими хартиями. Колония Нью-Йорк также начала раздавать земли в этих местах, что привело к пограничным спорам. Английские суды решили их в пользу Нью-Йорка. В ответ местные жители объединились в ополчение, получившее название "Парни с Зеленой горы" [Green Mountain Boys], а в 1777 Вермонт провозгласил себя независимым содружеством тауншипов
